Structure and tasks

In mid 2008 the internal organisation of the Department of Economy, Science and Innovation (EWI) got its current outline.
Within the department, four policy divisions were established:
- the Enterprise and Innovation Division monitors policy themes concerning the development of an appealing and sustainable entrepreneurial environment and the stimulation of innovation and entrepreneurship (head of division: Tom Tournicourt).
- the Research Division takes care of the science policy, by stimulating excellence in fundamental research and communicating about science, technology and technique (head of division: Philip Van Avermaet).
- the Knowlegde Management Division collects and analyses data concerning economy, science and innovation and converts it to accessible information and knowledge (head of division: Pascale Dengis).
- the Strategy and Co-ordination Division monitors various transversal policy themes and is responsible for the long term strategy and the evaluation and synchronisation of the policy within the department and the policy domain (head of division: Pierre Verdoodt).
Management Support Services is in charge of the operational basic services for the EWI policy domain (EWI Department and Agentschap Ondernemen) and the policy domain Work and Social Economy (WSE Department and WSE Agency) and the Flemish Science Policy Council. This division is presided by Gerda Vaes.
The Secretary-General of the Department is confined to the Executive Staff which is responsible for internal and external communication and organisational management.
Since 1 April 2010, the Department has been administered by Secretary-General Dirk Van Melkebeke.
