Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant breidt uit

Biogebaseerde toekomst

Bij Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant, een onderzoekscentrum in de Gentse haven naar innovatieve en duurzame technologieën, is maandag een nieuwe productiehal in gebruik genomen.

Met de steun van Europa, Vlaanderen, de stad Gent en de provincie Oost-Vlaanderen werd voor de productiehal meer dan 9 miljoen euro op tafel gelegd.

In de nieuwe productiehal kunnen bedrijven experimenteren met producten zoals bioplastics, biodetergenten, biosolventen, biochemicaliën en biomaterialen.

Het moet een omslag naar een biogebaseerde toekomst mogelijk maken, na het tijdperk van petroleum en steenkool.

Nieuwe infrastructuur

De Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant ging van start in 2009 en telt vandaag 70 medewerkers. Met het vers geld zal de proeffabriek nieuwe infrastructuur aankopen en apparatuur aanbieden aan bedrijven die biogebaseerde processen willen opschalen.

Omwille van confidentialiteit worden geen namen genoemd, maar het zijn niet enkel startups die bij de Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant terechtkunnen. Ook grote bedrijven doen beroep op de labo's.

Stad Gent investeert 311.000 euro in het project. Ook de provincie komt met hetzelfde bedrag over de brug. Vlaanderen legt zowat 1.250.000 euro en ook het Europees Fonds voor Regionale Ontwikkeling past 3.742.800 euro bij.

Although Horizon Europe (= the ninth European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation) is only halfway through, preparations for its successor have already begun. Therefore, in Flanders, the Working Group 12 of the Flemish Stakeholder Platform for European Programmes (VEP), has drafted a reflection paper on the future FP10. A similar exercise was done in the past for the current Horizon Europe programme.
