Europese Commissie maakt 300 miljoen euro extra vrij voor bescherming van oceanen

Europa gaat 300 miljoen euro vrijmaken om nieuwe initiatieven voor de bescherming van de oceanen te financieren. Het gaat in het bijzonder over projecten tegen plasticvervuiling. Dat maakte de de Europese Commissie bekend op de conferentie "Our Ocean" in Bali.

Het gaat om "projecten ter bestrijding van vervuiling door plastic, om de duurzaamheid van de blauwe economie te verhogen en om het onderzoek en de monitoring op zee te verbeteren", verklaart de Europese Commissie in een mededeling.

Zo'n 100 miljoen euro zal gebruikt worden voor de financiering van onderzoeks- en ontwikkelingsprojecten voor de bestrijding van vervuiling door kunststoffen en 82 miljoen "voor maritieme onderzoeksprojecten, zoals zoals ecosysteembeoordeling, cartografie van de zeebodem en innovatieve aquacultuursystemen".

Verder zal de Commissie 13 miljoen euro toewijzen aan het aardobservatieprogramma van de Copernicus-satelliet.

De 300 miljoen euro komt boven op de 550 miljoen die vorig jaar is aangekondigd tijdens de vorige editie van de conferentie, die toen op Malta plaatsvond.
