De wereldwijde COVID-19 pandemie heeft de noodzaak aangetoond van een snelle en open uitwisseling van data teneinde wetenschappelijk onderzoek te versnellen. De Europese Commissie en EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), samen met de EU-lidstaten en partners zoals ELIXIR, beheren het Europees COVID-19 Data Platform.
Dit platform faciliteert het verzamelen en uitwisselen van beschikbare onderzoeksgegevens voor de Europese en mondiale onderzoeksgemeenschappen. Deze gezamenlijke inspanning is een prioritair project om de doelstellingen van de European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) te realiseren.
Het blijft een voortdurende uitdaging om relevante data beschikbaar te maken, met waar nodig een beveiligde datatoegangscontrole. Dit vereist de implementatie van datamanagement workflows in klinische laboratoria en het informeren van stakeholders over de mogelijkheden van het ecosysteem om dit zo optimaal mogelijk te gebruiken.
Tijdens het online evenement op 1 december 2021 willen we specifiek de instituten en laboratoria bereiken die gegevens genereren van infectieziekten.
Waar de focus van het COVID-19 Data Platform aanvankelijk lag op beschikbaar stellen van genomische data, verschuift dit nu naar het koppelen van genetische sequentie data aan maatschappelijke, epidemiologische, klinische, ... data. We zullen de ontwikkelingen, zowel op nationaal als op Europees niveau, die de interoperabiliteit van deze diverse datasets mogelijk te maken, demonstreren.
Verder willen we uitdagingen en mogelijke knelpunten voor de verdere implementatie van het Europees COVID-19 Data Platform in kaart brengen om beter voorbereid te zijn voor uitbraken van andere infectieziekten.

The global COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the need for rapid and open sharing of data to accelerate research. The European Commission and EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), together with EU Member States and partners such as ELIXIR, operate a dedicated European COVID-19 Data Platform. This platform enables the rapid collection and comprehensive data sharing of available research data from different sources for the European and global research communities. This joint effort is a priority pilot to realise the objectives of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).
The availability of data, with secure data access control where appropriate, is an ongoing challenge. This requires embedding of data management workflows in clinical labs and making all stakeholders aware of the complete ecosystem to optimally benefit from it.
During this online event we specifically want to reach out to the institutes and labs generating data on infectious diseases.
While initially the focus of the COVID-19 Data Platform was on making genomics data available, this is now shifting to linking genetic sequence data to societal, epidemiological, clinical, ... data. We will showcase the developments at national and European level to enable the interoperability of these diverse datasets. Furthermore, we would like to understand the challenges and possible bottlenecks for the further implementation of the European COVID-19 Data Platform to address preparedness for infectious disease outbreaks.
